EtS - Station 4 - the supper
the Supper
perhaps what was the most accessable sacrament of the church has become the most mundane and reserved... how often is there wine overflowing, or loaves stacked high?
the supper was an opportunity for people to rediscover this most utterly sublime ritual we have in our tradition. the breaking of bread, the sharing of wine... the eating and drinking with others: with all our joy; our pain; our secrets; our anticipation; our hope; our fear - just like those who shared together 2000 years ago in an upstairs room.
the room was plain, the set up was simple...
a lamp in a corner, a low central table and coushins surrounding it.
our table was raised off the floor about 100mm. coushins surrounded the table which was covered with grapes, wine, juice, loaves & loaves of bread, seeds, vine leaves, and candles... a number of different goblets and 'cups' were scattered about the feast.
the following inivitation was offered:
the Supper
(through the ordinary)
In the ordinariness of a meal, in the breaking of bread and the sharing of wine – we are united together. We do so remembering the coming of God in Jesus. As a sign of a renewed relationship with God, Jesus broke bread and shared wine symbolising his own physical form of body and blood. This meal represents our unity with Christ and each other.
This is the journey of the cross: forgiveness… relationship… hope
